Dream

The light music of the orchestra drifted into the chandelier which reflected the glowing faces down below. Though the night had grown quite dark, the large ballroom was lit with a warm, golden glow that magnified the colors on each gown and jacket. The sea of swishing skirts and stomping boots swayed to the elegant waltz that played dreamily, as if the notes themselves were dancing along.

Rose watched the dance as if it were the last thing she would ever see. She stood perfectly still as the moonlight from the garden window shimmered on her dark curls and twinkled on her starry blue dress. A smile barely showed on her lips and her finger waved to the music at her side. She feared that, if she took a breath, it would all disappear.

Her roaming eyes came to rest on a man with a handsome purple coat who stood across the room. His soft eyes stared back at her with such power that it made Rose drop her eyes. When she gathered the courage to look up again, the man was standing in front of her, gazing at her with his mysterious stare.

"I've never seen a rose so blue," he said, his voice like the warm waters of a waterfall bubbling down the rocks. He took her hand in his and gently kissed it, his eyes never leaving her face. Rose couldn't help but feel dizzy.

"I'm afraid you have me at a loss," she finally managed. "You know my name, and yet I have yet to learn yours."

The man's smile was sunshine. He gently pulled her into the swirling crowd of dancers and began to dance with her as the music slowed to a gentle, soothing tune. He pulled her closer and closer with each step until she could feel his heart against her chest; could feel his warm breath on her neck. He smelled like the fresh rain in the apple orchards.

Rose slipped into the dream around her, in the warmth of this man's arms, wrapped in the flitting sounds of flutes and violins. She let her eyes close against the golden light and felt as if she was floating high above the other party goers, dancing in the crystals of the chandelier.

When the music stopped, Rose didn't want to let go. The crowd dispersed as the guests went home, but Rose still clung to the man, hoping that, if she held tight enough, she could keep dreaming.

The man took her up into his arms, and she rested her head against his chest as he carried her out into the garden and the cool night air.

At the center of the garden, he laid her down on a bench that rested amidst the white roses aglow in the moonlight. Rose looked up at his perfect face and whispered, "Please don't leave me."

The man smiled again, stroking her luminous hair. Without warning, their bodies met in a kiss that made Rose melt in his arms and made her head spin.

He finally released her, breathless as she was, and laid her down on the cold stone. She closed her eyes, unable to keep them open, and, as she drifted off to sleep beneath the roses, she heard the footfalls of his boots as they echoed through the garden.
