JSYK27: The thing about North Carolinians and Snow
Here's the thing about North Carolina. They shut down the schools because of "the threat of inclement weather". As in, the weather man says it might snow, and the schools are closed. The reason being that we really don't get much snow around these parts. People go crazy when they see snow on the road and get into crashes and empty store aisles of bread and beans. It's quite humorous to see it all unfold.
I used to live in South Dakota where it snows whenever it feels like it. If you could see your hand in front of your face, you could bet that there was going to be school that day. They could bring the buses through anything short of solid rock. I remember dreaming about what a snow day might be like, and thinking all those kids on tv were so lucky.
Well, today the weather man triumphed in his accurate prediction of 6 inches! If you had asked any North Carolinian if they believed we would get that much snow after Christmas, they would laugh in your face. And yet, when our eyes slowly slid open this morning we were greeted with frosty window sills and cancellations.
Now, this is all good and well. Every county deserves a snow day now and then. But, as the day drew on, we realized the snow just kept falling. In the back of our minds we all hoped and prayed for a second snow day to follow this, but we all knew we were pushing our luck. That never happens in North Carolina.
And yet, it seems I will be staying up and watching old Mission Impossible shows with my family tonight, because our double snow day is officially in effect.
